Texas uses AI to grade tests

Hello,

thanks for showing up again.

Today, I want to talk about something very exciting with you.

Texas wants to use AI to grade standardized tests.

A lot of students already use ChatGPT or any similar Chatbot in school. But in the US-State Texas, the teachers are about to get help.

So the mission here is to automize the grading process for the STAAR exams in Texas.

The AI model that they are using is way more capable than you might think. It is not only able to answer basic multiple choice questions, but it can also answer open-ended questions for every subject there is.

But why is Texas doing this. Well, it's the reason it almost always is. Money. Texas will save a lot of money if they are doing this. The education agency will save about 20 million dollars every year because they only have to hire about 2,000 graders instead of the usual 6,000.

The way they trained the Ai is simple. They just took all the past STAAR exams that human teachers already graded and gave them to the AI. You now may ask: "What if it makes a mistake?". That's why the tests of a quarter of the students will still get graded by a human to assure that the system works as intended.

I really like where this is going, and that AI is getting implemented in every part of the world more and more.

Today’s post was a short one, because I really wanted to tell you about this, but I didn't stretch the reading duration unnecessarily.

Have an amazing day and I'll see you next Friday.
